Sensing and Actuation

Production technologies for the application and integration of sensors and actuators enable miniaturization and functional integration in modern mechatronic systems. By integrating directly into the material level of components, particularly small and powerful components can be created.

The Fraunhofer IWU researches and develops flexible production systems that can produce sensors and actuators on or in the component fully automatically.

These make it possible to provide sophisticated products such as consumer products, prostheses or tools with electrical and sensory functions individually and without assembly effort. Sensor-actuator printing reduces dependency on complex supply networks and increases responsiveness to market changes. They also improve process monitoring and quality assurance. By using sensor technology in production, processes can be monitored and adjusted in real time to ensure optimal conditions. This is particularly important in series production, where consistently high quality standards are required. Overall, production technologies for the application and integration of sensors and actuators are crucial to meeting the requirements for modern, highly functional and reliable products while increasing the efficiency and flexibility of production.

Projects

4D printed, textile headphones

A 3D-printed plastic application on a pre-tensioned textile gives it its individual shape. Electrical components can already be integrated into the structure during the manufacturing process. When the textile relaxes after the application process, the component automatically takes on a three-dimensional, (electrically) functional shape specified by the user.

Individually printed actuator coils

The WEAM process enables the construction of a theoretically unlimited number of coil windings thanks to rotational decoupling. Thanks to the free choice of materials, we can integrate coils fully automatically into different environments. The additive component of the WEAM process makes it possible to create any coil contours in order to achieve specific field line densities.
