Leading institute for resource-efficient production
Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU is a driver of innovations in the field of research and development for production technology. We open up potentials, develop solutions, improve technologies and advance innovations in science and contract research. Our focus lies on components, technologies and processes, complex machine systems – the entire factory.
As the leading institute for resource-efficient production within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, we primarily focus on developing efficient technologies and intelligent production systems for manufacturing components of car bodies and powertrains. Furthermore, we optimize their related manufacturing processes of forming and cutting, emphasizing the focus on the entire process chain. Key success factors include the development of lightweight structures and technologies for processing new materials as well as functional integration in assembly groups.
Over 530 highly qualified employees conduct research at our sites in Chemnitz, Dresden and Zittau, investigating sunrise industries such as automotive and mechanical engineering, aerospace industry or medical engineering, but also electrical engineering, precision engineering and micro technology.
Our “E3-Forschungsfabrik Resource-Efficient Production” deals with topics regarding the production of tomorrow. Together with industrial partners we focus on developing technologies and processes in order to extend the competitive advantage for the German industry by investigating energy and resource-efficient production technologies, new factory concepts and new approaches for the role of people in production.
