Shape Memory Alloys - Material Characterization

Determination of material characteristics in every design step

We are skilled in all methods of metallurgical, physical and mechanical analysis of SMA materials. Using established characterization concepts in accordance with ASTM standards and other innovative methods, we are able to determine the transformation and forming behavior of the materials and describe them at the atomic level via the crystal structure. In addition to simple tensile and compression tests, we also carry out complex measurements using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Focus of our research

The determination of relevant material parameters that accurately represent the thermomechanical behavior of SMA under real conditions is essential for the design, numerical simulation and also for the experimental validation of parts and components.  In addition, digitalization plays a decisive role in material characterization as another focus of our research. This allows material data to be reproducibly recorded and processed and then analyzed using artificial intelligence methods.

Projects

Digitization of smart materials and their manufacturing processes (SmaDi)

In the BMBF joint project “Digitization of smart materials and their manufacturing processes (SmaDi)“ Fraunhofer IWU is focusing on the functional materials thermal (SMA) and magnetic (MSM) shape memory materials. The specific objective of the joint project is to develop a digital representation of these materials and components as well as their manufacturing processes.

The knowledge required for industrial practice on macroscopic linear and non-linear material behavior, including the relevant manufacturing processes, will be linked via databases. In addition to the microstructure-based and continuum-physical material models and the component models of the subclasses derived from them, a consistent description of the physical domains involved is provided. The methodology chosen in the project explicitly aims to develop and test the ontology within the framework of a proven information processing paradigm in close cooperation with the MaterialDigital innovation platform.

Development of a multistable push-pull actuator with magnetic shape memory alloy 

For new applications with magnetic shape memory alloys in tension-compression operation, the project addresses two important challenges relating to actuator and connection technology and provides solutions to companies through technology transfer. The new actuator concept developed as part of the project combines high dynamics, comparable to conventional electrodynamic actuators, with a multistable holding force, which would normally have to be achieved using self-locking gears or complex braking mechanisms that reduce dynamics. In conjunction with suitable connection technology, tension-compression actuators with a long service life can be realized. Such properties are increasingly required in a wide range of actuators, especially in automation and automotive engineering.

Due to short switching times, high energy density of the material, low wear during operation, and contactless excitation, growing demand is predicted for these actuator elements. This results in both innovative and improved products, especially for SMEs that are heavily involved in this market. Considering the entire value chain, SME-dominated material suppliers and partners in connection technology also benefit from this. PA's partners represent the entire chain for various applications such as valve, gripping, and clamping technology with strong SME participation.
