The integration of SMA into polymer parts opens up a bunch of possibilities for making smart and adaptive components. Using injection molding, SMA elements can be embedded directly into the polymer matrix, which means complex actuator systems can be made in just one step. Experimental investigations have shown that even mechanically blocked SMA wire actuators, which are injected at temperatures above 200°C, can subsequently achieve several million actuation cycles without significant functional or structural fatigue.
Extrusion or pultrusion processes can also be used to manufacture profiles in order to integrate SMA wires or foils into polymer-based structures. Thermoforming processes allow SMA semi-finished products to be shaped precisely and adapted to existing designs.
Lamination processes enable SMA to be integrated layer by layer, even in combination with semi-finished textile products. This allows both mechanical stability and actuator or sensor functionality to be achieved. The choice of process depends on the specific requirements of the application and requires a coordinated selection of materials and semi-finished products, as well as process optimization.
