Projects and cooperations in the Fraunhofer research network

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence

These clusters promote the cooperative development and processing of system-relevant topics through a cross-institutional research structure. They aim not only at the temporary implementation of a single project, but pursue a roadmap for the long-term development of a complex technology trend.

Fraunhofer Lighthouse Projects

Fraunhofer uses lighthouse projects to set strategic priorities in upstream research.

Competence Network Quantum Computing

In a nationwide competence network, Fraunhofer aims to advance the key technology of quantum computing in Germany and develop new technological solutions as well as quantum-based computing strategies for applied, economically relevant issues. Fraunhofer supports companies in this country in building up the necessary expertise.

Fraunhofer High-Performance Centers

High-Performance centers organize a strategic topic-based collaboration between several public and private research & development partners. Universities, higher education institutions, Fraunhofer Institutes and further non-university research institutions work together with companies and civil society as locally anchored ecosystems to improve economic impact and societal benefits of R&D.

Fraunhofer Group for Production

In the Fraunhofer Group for Production, Fraunhofer Institute cooperate with the aim of collaborating on production-oriented research and development in order to be able to offer customers in industry, commerce and the service sector comprehensive single-source solutions derived from the pooling of the wide-ranging expertise and experience of the individual institutes. The range of services covers the entire product life cycle or the entire value chain.

Fraunhofer Automobile Production Alliance

Lead market-oriented alliances generate system solutions and cross-institute offerings, especially for selected industries with high relevance for the innovative strength of Germany and Europe. Fraunhofer IWU coordinates the autoMOBILproduktion alliance – the lead market-oriented alliance for mechanical and plant engineering.

Fraunhofer Innovation Platform

A Fraunhofer Innovation Platform (FIP) is a temporary research unit at a university or research institution abroad. Fraunhofer promotes cooperation in order to use, transfer and exploit scientific research results even more effectively.

Thematic Networks

Institutes or departments of institutes organize themselves in thematic networks with concentration on a scientific-technological research topic.
